Happenin’ Hayes

We all have those things that make us simply happier. For me it’s seeing gas prices drop, having my hair brushed, the first sip of coffee in the morning and getting every green light down Fell Street. Exploring a new place has the same effect on my mood. I love to stroll, walk through a neighborhood with a coffee looking in windows, scanning menus for future night outs and of course people watch. Today the lucky location was Hayes Valley–a very trendy yet unassuming destination.

Patricia's Green on the corner of Hayes and Octavia

Tired from the long walk from Pac Heights, I headed immediately for Patricia’s Green. The crowd proved to be an eclectic mix of ranting homeless, lunching professionals and the young “funemployed” such as myself. The streets jetting off from the green are spotted with adorbale shops and inviting restaurants. I couldn’t believe the hustle and bustle on a Wednesday. And the very well dressed crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as I was.

With so many restaurants to choose from, I was glad I didn’t come to eat. I did though come to puruse the menus and add restaurants to my “Places to Eat Docket.” Paxti’s Chicago Pizza, Crepe House, Absinthe Bar and Flipper’s Burgers all made the list. Hip and quaint, Hayes Valley is the perfect neighborhood for a leisurely lunch with a friend. With so many cute boutiques to browse through, a lunch date could turn into an afternoon of retail therapy.

  1. Kendall, is there any connection to the Hayes Mansion in San Jose where we’ve been? Thinking that the Hayes Family had a “summer house” in San Jose. Many well-to-do families had 2 or more residences.
