DIY Playdough Sensory Kit

I’ve been truly blown away by how much my girls loved the Halloween and Christmas playdough sensory kits I made last year. They played with the Christmas kit well into January, giving them almost two months of entertainment. In late January, I made two more – an arctic theme and a fairy theme – and most recently swapped those two out for Valentine’s baking theme and St. Patrick’s Day kits.

Your kids won’t know that you didn’t spend $40+ and will elicit responses like, “this is ah-ma-zing, mom!” Chances are you already have a lot of what you’ll need, but if you don’t stock up on a few things to reuse and repurpose for months to come.

Craft and household items you may already have:

  • Seasonal/thematic cookie cutters
  • Seasonal cheese knives that don’t cut skin (or your table)
  • Silicone baking cups
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Stamps
  • Yarn, pompoms, cotton balls, ribbon, gems, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, or other craft supplies
  • Little toy figures/animals you already have. I used all the fairies and accessories from this Lakeshore Learning toy and it gave new life to a toy the girls haven’t used in a while.

The Dollar Tree is really the place to go for seasonal additions. You can also find some things in the Target Dollar Spot but it’s really gone downhill in recent years, in my opinion. Everything I buy will either be reused for some craft after the box loses its appeal or saved for next year – anything so that these things don’t end up in a landfill.

In terms of the actual playdough, there are so many recipes for homemade dough that seem easy enough, but that’s not high on my priority list right now. Especially when I bought this assorted pack on sale for $12.50 and it arrived the same day.

For whatever reason, if making a fun – albeit unnecessary – playdough kit for your kid is off the table just collect some random twigs, leaves, and rocks from your yard. Kids love sticking any random *crap* into playdough. We are living through a pandemic after all.

Happy crafting!
