5 Tips to Make the Perfect Fall Porch

I love how being into the holidays these days has been coined being a “basic B” when in reality the holidays are anything but basic. I’m always more than ready for the season because every year it’s the first time in months when I’m back in nesting mode after a busy, out-of-the-house summer. The past few mornings have been in the ’60s (woohoo!), I’ve been purchasing pumpkins as I find them, and I’m ready to dive into all things seasonal. Even if that makes me basic.

I’ve started putting together my fall porch – and have a trunk full of hay to prove it. Today I’m sharing some of my tips and inspiration for a festive display.

1. Choose a color scheme for your pumpkins. The porches I love most are the ones where the pumpkins look like they’ve been chosen with intention. Whether you decide to go with muted vs. vibrant colors, don’t be too quick to grab whatever you see first. Ask your local store when they get new shipments and go once or twice to get the best selection for your vision.

2. Use hay bales for height. If you don’t have a bunch of steps leading to your door, hay bales are a great way to add height. You can buy half a bale of hay for ~$8 at local feed stores. They’ll also cut it into smaller pieces if you ask. These look so much better than the prepackaged ones from Home Depot.

3. Cornstalks. Buying dozens and dozens of pumpkins will add up quickly. Cornstalks are a good way to beef up a porch display without adding more pumpkins. Add a few crows and remove them in November for a quick transition from Halloween to harvest.

4. Repot mums. If you’re going to add mums, I wouldn’t just plop them down in the faux wood pots from Home Depot. Repot those beauties in terracotta pot or a basket, but at a minimum hide the plastic pot with pumpkins.

5. Less sometimes really is more. One of my most revisited ‘Pins’ is the first image in this post. I love the simplicity of that porch, which was still clearly pulled together with thought.

Happy Fall!
