The Art of Sitting Around the Table

Hands down. Without a doubt. No question about it. My favorite moments in life happen around the table. I certainly don’t remember what we talked about, but I remember the hysterical laugher and looks of pure, unadulterated joy on the faces of the people I love. Whether it be Reischl family dinners, a 30-person Thanksgiving feast, the Delta Zeta breakfast table after a crazy night, belly laughs and White Castle cheeseburgers around the Gallo’s kitchen island or bistro tables in Spain, they all share a common thread: laughter and a whole lot of L-O-V-E.

It’s always unexpected, there is something in the air that turns 30 minutes into three hours. People linger. The sounds of cell phones and places to be are drowned out by conversation. One unintentionally drinks more red wine than initially planned, definitely gives into that dieting blowing piece of carrot cake and leaves utterly fulfilled. Maybe that’s just me.

I must admit it’s been a hard transition to go from nearly nightly company around the table to cooking for one in my 20-something apartment. In the age of 12 hour work days and eating peanut butter toast for dinner I have come to realize that sitting around the table with the loves of your life is art, in it’s most palpable form. I have been incredibly blessed to sit at a table with such fine people.
